Is this work legit?
It’s a fair question — there are real scams in remote work, and these platforms are young. The short answer: the platforms are real, the pay is real, and the work is real, but the experience isn’t perfect — onboarding can be slow, and work arrives in bursts rather than steadily. We’ve reviewed the main platforms honestly, downsides included:
- Mercor — Is Mercor a scam? Our evidence-based review →
- Micro1 — Is Micro1 a scam? An evidence-based answer →
- Alignerr — Is Alignerr a scam? A clear review →
What AI training work actually is
AI models are trained partly by people. A model produces an answer; an expert judges whether it’s right, ranks it against other answers, or writes the answer the model should have given. Do that across thousands of examples and the model gets better at the thing you know. That’s the work — judging and correcting AI output in your field of expertise.
It goes by a few names: RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback), model evaluation, data annotation, red-teaming. They describe the same underlying job from different angles: a knowledgeable human telling the model what good looks like.
What the work involves
Most roles are a mix of a few task types. You might:
- Evaluate answers — read what the model produced and score it for accuracy, safety, or quality. The most common task, and the easiest to start with.
- Compare and rank — see two or more answers to the same question and put them in order of quality. This is the core of RLHF.
- Write reference answers — produce the gold-standard answer the model is measured against. Higher-skill: you’re not just spotting the right answer, you’re explaining it so others can apply it at scale.
- Annotate and label — mark up content so the model can learn from it.
- Red-team — probe for the cases where the model fails or behaves unsafely, before real users hit them.
Some roles add transcription, translation, or voice recording. A few want specific software — Excel, a CAD package, a particular tool — but most just want your judgement.
Who can do it
If you’re an expert in something, there’s probably work for you. The platforms recruit across medicine, nursing, the sciences, engineering, software, finance, law, mathematics, the humanities, and more. The common thread isn’t a CV line — it’s the ability to tell a confident-sounding wrong answer from a right one, and to say why.
You don’t need an AI background. You don’t need to code (outside the software-engineering roles, which do). The platforms provide the task instructions and examples. What they can’t provide is your expertise — that’s the part they’re paying for.
What it pays
Rates run from about $60 to $250 an hour, set by the platform according to the field and the seniority of the role. Specialist and senior work pays at the top of that range; broad evaluation work sits lower. Pay is in US dollars, usually weekly, via Stripe or Wise. The figures on each role card are the platform’s stated rates — we never mark them up, and the referral fee we earn comes from the platform, never from your pay.
How the platforms work
Mercor, Micro1 and Turing are staffing platforms that connect experts with AI companies. You don’t apply for one fixed job — you join a pool. You complete a profile, pass an AI-led interview, and then the platform matches you to projects as they come up. “Approved” means you’re eligible; work arrives when a project fits your profile. That’s why some weeks are busy and others quiet, and why joining a pool now is worth doing even if nothing’s live in your field today.
Common questions
Is it remote? Yes. The work is fully remote and self-scheduled. You choose when you work; there’s no shift, no meeting, no patient or client contact.
Do I need to code? No, except for the software-engineering roles. Most work is reading, judging, and writing — assessing AI output and explaining your reasoning.
Is it employment or contract work? Contract project work, not employment. You’re an independent contractor with the platform. Check your own employer’s policy on secondary work, and your tax position (IR35 / sole-trader) if you’re in the UK.
How long until I’m earning? Onboarding usually takes one to four weeks. A first paid task can come immediately or after a few months, depending on demand in your field. That range is normal and isn’t a reflection on you.
Why use a referral? You can apply to these platforms directly. Applying through ACJ means Sean — a named, real person — vouches for you, and you get our honest guidance on which platforms and roles suit your background. It costs you nothing and doesn’t affect your pay.

Who’s behind this
Applied Clinical Judgement is run by Sean Key, a Digital Health Senior Programme Manager with 29 years across the NHS and private healthcare — LIMS and PACS deployments, primary and urgent care, mental health, and national interoperability work. Not a clinician; a practitioner who understands how digital health is built, procured, and adopted in the real world.
ACJ identifies AI training roles across Mercor, Micro1 and Turing and refers qualified people to them. If you’re placed, ACJ earns a referral fee from the platform — never from you, and it never affects your application.
